The Dark Knight Rises - Self-made trailer – Self evaluation.

In BTEC Media, My class and I were given the task to create our own ‘Batman: The Dark Knight Rises’ trailer from the original film footage for our Editing Unit.

At a brief moment at the very beginning of the trailer I have edited a short clip of footage of a chalk drawing being made of the sing of The Batman. This way it grabs the audience’s attention by realizing that the trailer is about the new Batman film.

Further on from the beginning of my trailer I firstly introduced the villain – Bane. The reason why I started by introducing the antagonist is because in every different Batman film, there is always a new villain e.g.: The last time it was The Joker played by Heath Ledger and this time it is Bane who is played by Tom Hardy. Another reason why I introduced the villain is to make the audience question if The Batman is coming back to save the city of Gotham from this man in the mask. This statement then moves me onto my next reason why I featured Bane first. I got a clip when Bane is saying one of his most famous lines – “Nobody cared who I was until I put on the mask”. By using this line, it makes the audience focus on Bane’s appearance and question why he wears the mask. I think this was good for me to use because it grabs the audience’s attention and makes them curious about this new villain.

After this point, I reveal Bruce Wayne and Alfred in the Bat-Cave where we find them search up on a jewel thief that has been causing havoc all over Gotham. This gives more of a hint towards the question: “Is The Batman coming back?” which captives the audience more into curiosity.

I then have long shots of the jewel thief who turns out to be Cat Woman. I decided to have long shots to allow the audience to see and understand the character of this allusive jewel thief. When Cat Woman (played by Anne Hathaway) shows any form of action, I added an audio file of more upbeat and serious music. Thus creating the impression to the audience that danger and excitement are included in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’.

I begin to add short cuts of the footage in my trailer from this point. This was my attempt to achieve action shots to create a bigger impact of action for the trailer and on the audience.

The clips that I have included in these short cuts is of Batman and Cat Woman either trying to avoid or any fight scenes with the antagonist Bane. This was my way to convey that Bane is the main treat to even a notorious jewel thief.

I then reveal clips of the problems which Bane is causing such as the football arena scene and the security camera recording which zooms in on Bane. This is my way of showing the audience what Bane is capable of and how much of the threat he is to the people of Gotham.

Towards the end of my trailer I expose a clip of The Batman on a tower in full superhero costume which is my way of finally answering the question that Batman is back.

Lastly, I have key framed a clip of Alfred speaking to Bruce Wayne about a “pit” and “a man rises” with the Batman costume rising from the floor. I think that this relates perfectly to the title giving the impression that The Batman is rising from the person he once was into something better and stronger.

The only improvement I would say I could make is that I could work more on the audio to make it less jumpy to be able to achieve a bigger impact on the viewing audience.

The Dark Knight Rises - Self-made trailer - Peer Assessment by Nat Carrad 12ARL

The beginning of the trailer was slow paced which suits the tone of the film.
The use of only Alfred and the music becoming quieter at the end was effective because it entices the viewer to see the film.
It could be better if the audio was smoother when transitioning between clips.
